About Unemployment Protection
Even if
you are performing well at work, economic conditions that
you would not have thought about could mean your company needs
to cut back, and your role may be made redundant. Think about
what would happen to you in this case. If you had no income
for a few months, would you be able to afford your mortgage?
Would you be able to afford to pay back your loans? Would
you be able to pay off your credit cards? If not, you could
lose your home.
Many people
feel that they will be OK if they are unemployed for a while
because their savings will see them through helped by government
benefits. Well, firstly the government will not help you until
you hardly have any savings, and even if they do, what you
get is derisory. In 1994, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer
used his budget to announce that he wanted to stop people
depending on the state for their mortgage payments should
they become unemployed. From April 1995 people who are unemployed
with a mortgage get no financial assistance for the first
2 months and only 50% of their interest paid for the next
four months. This was added to in October 1995 when new borrowers
would not receive any benefits from the state for the first
nine months of their unemployment.
Unemployment
Protection - It's Up To You!
So it
is up to you to make sure that you are protected as the safety
net that used to be the welfare state is gone. How can you
do this? Income protection insurance pays you a monthly amount
if you are unable to work because of illness or disability.
It goes on paying until you get better and return to work,
or you die or reach the policy termination age, usually your
expected retirement age. The maximum benefit you can insure
is around 60% of gross (pre-tax) income although this figure
does vary from insurer to insurer.
Some income
protection policies use a with-profits or unit linked investment
base, either as a technical mechanism to keep premiums low,
or to give a cash return on retirement.
There
are a vast number of Insurers with a bewildering array of
policies, this can confuse even the most experienced among
us whilst searching for the right type of policy. To help
you, here at Cheapest
Unemployment Protection UK we have
produced a list of recommended providers, along with a glossary
to help you understand some of the ever changing jargon that
is used in the financial industry and some pages that contains,
we hope, the right information to help you make an informed
decision.
